DIY Marble Tie-dye diya step by step guide:

(you can also watch the video tutorial below)

  1. Clean the diya with a cloth and mixture (equal part vinegar and water). If loose bits of clay use a brush to remove access clay. Let air dry for 10 minutes.

  2. Paint the entire diya with white acrylic paint. Let dry for at least 1 hour

  3. Next select three to four pouring paint colors. It is important to purchase pouring acrylic paint otherwise you won’t get the marble effect. However, if you only have acrylic paint, you can dilute your acrylic paint with water.

  4. Out of the colors selected, choose a base color. Usually the lightest color you select. I have selected the metallic lavender.

  5. Select an accent color like gold or silver. Gold or silver will be used to line the diya and for splatter.

  6. In a paint bowl, pour each color into separate sections of the bowl. Then take the white acrylic paint and add drops to the paint. Using a Popsicle stick or knife slowly move the white paint into the rest of the colors to make a light design.

  7. Pour the base color (lightest color) into a separate bowl. Then pour slowly onto diya. This can be a little messy but its well worth it. You do not need to cover the entire diya just make sure you pour it over the inside and outside. Let any excess drip onto the tablecloth.

  8. Next, pour the paint bowl with all of your colors in it on to the diya. Make sure you cover the inside and outside by swirling the paint around. Let any excess drip off the diya onto the tablecloth. If any part of the diya is not covered, roll the diya onto the paint that has fallen onto the tablecloth. Stop when fully covered.

  9. Next, get your metallic pouring paint and Popsicle stick. Dip the Popsicle stick into the paint and flick onto diya. Use only a little and flick sparingly.

  10. Once the diya is to your liking place it on top of the table cloth right side up to dry.

  11. Diya will dry for four hours. Two hours into the drying, see if there is any access paint in the diva’s base. If so, tip diya to drain excess paint and flip the diya upside down to continue drying for two more hours.

  12. After the diya is dry, use either gold or silver metallic paint to paint the trim of the diya.

  13. After one hour the diya will be ready. Spray two coats of clear sealer to ensure no chipping. Note you will need to spray it on the base too. Let it dry 15 minutes for each coat.

  14. You are done!

  15. Place tealights or pour oil and place wick into diya to brighten the night!
